'Filly Brown' Crew Sets Release Date, Casts Gina Rodriguez In 'Marching Banda': SXSW

Gina Rodriguez Marching BandaEXCLUSIVE: The team behind Sundance pic Filly Brown and SXSW entry Snap are reuniting with actress Gina Rodriguez on Marching Banda. Rodriguez, who played the eponymous lead in the hip-hop flavored Filly Brown, will star as a single mother of a high school trumpet player in the Cima Productions pic. When the boy's estranged musician father turns up, he bonds with his son as he begins teaching traditional Mexican regional music to the school's marching band. Marching Banda is set for a late summer start with Filly Brown director Youssef Delara helming. Amir Delara, Victor Teran and Delara will produce for their Cima Productions banner. The script is by Teran, Delara's writer and co-director on Snap, a psychological thriller set in the world of dubstep starring Jake Hoffman, Nikki Reed, Scott Bakula, Jason Priestley, and Thomas Dekker. Snap world-premieres at SXSW on Tuesday. Delara and Teran are repped by Verve's Adam Levine and Rob Herting and Jeremy Platt at Generate.

Meanwhile, there's good news for Filly Brown. The acquisitions title out of Sundance 2012 was shuffled around in the wake of Indomina Releasing's shutdown and received renewed interest after the tragic death of Mexican pop idol and reality TV personality Jenni Rivera. Third-party distributor Pantelion is now set to release the pic theatrically April 19.
