SATURDAY 7 AM UPDATE: I can't wait to spend the next days making fun of washed-up Arnold Schwarzenegger flopping in 9th place playing a washed-up lawman in The Last Stand. 'Nobody wants to see Arnold,' one rival studio exec giggled Friday night. The actioner featuring The Guvernator's first solo comeback to the big screen is just one of the major newcomers that opened for the long Martin Luther King holiday weekend. No question that Universal's supernatural thriller Mama (2,647 theaters) - 'presented' by Guillermo Del Toro to lend it credibility ' debuted #1 Friday with $10M and will stay tops through Monday with an overperforming $30.5M. 'We think it was the advertising on Twilight [Breaking Dawn Part 2] and the really scary trailer targeted to girls,' a Uni exec preens. Remains to be seen if its unimpressive 'B-' CinemaScore from audiences will affect word of mouth. In #2 is last weekend's topper Annapurna Pictures/Sony Pictures' Zero Dark Thirty (2,946 theaters after 5 weeks) with the Best Picture Oscar nominee $4.5M Friday and $20.1M for the four-day holiday. In #3 is The Weinstein Company's R-rated Best Picture Oscar nominee Silver Linings Playbook (2,523 theaters after 10 weeks) which finally expanded for a $13.3 MLK. New Regency's critically panned dramatic thriller Broken City (2,620 theaters) breaks Mark Wahlberg long string of hits. Also starring Catherine Zeta-Jones and Russell Crowe (thankfully, not singing) and distributed by Fox, it debuted only #4 and should finish with a sorry $16.5M for the four days. That kind of star power should be generating at least $25M for the long weekend especially with a so-so 'B' CinemaScore from audiences. As #5, Warner Bros' disappointing holdover Gangster Squad (3,103 theaters) isn't going to see much more gross with a measly $11.2M for MLK. Finally, Lionsgate should demand its money back from Arnie who clearly can't open a movie anymore even with a 'B' CinemaScore from audiences. Pic made only a pathetic $1.9M Friday and probably no more than $6.6M for the long holiday. I don't think that even pays for Schwarzenegger's cigar bill. On other fronts, Eon Productions/MGM/Sony Pictures' James Bond #23 Skyfall passed the $300M domestic mark Friday night after earlier marking $1B in worldwide box office. Full analysis later this morning.
