The top prize Golden and Silver Bears will be announced here in Berlin later this evening. In the meantime, winners are starting to roll out from amongst the various sections and jury groups.
The Panorama Audience Awards were announced earlier this afternoon. Felix van Groeningen's The Broken Circle Breakdown, a love story set in the world of bluegrass music, won the top prize. Yesterday, it was also awarded the Europa Cinemas Label for top film in the section. The Act Of Killing, about a group of Indonesian men who revist and reenact assasinations they committed after the military coup of 1965, was named best Panorama documentary. Joshua Oppenheimer's Danish/Norwegian/British co-production was one of the most talked about films here in Berlin and Drafthouse Films has the U.S.
In other prizes, the Ecumenical Jury awarded competition crowd-pleaser Gloria from Sebastian Lelio with its top prize. Gloria was acquired earlier this week by Roadside Attractions for the U.S. The Act Of Killing was awarded the Ecumenical Jury prize from among the Panorama titles and Srdan Golubovic's Circles, a post-war drama set in Serbia, was selected out of the Forum sidebar.
FIPRESCI prizes from the association of international film critics were awarded to Child's Pose, the story of a mother trying to save her son from prison and directed by Calin Peter Netzer in the competition; Inch'Allah, about a Québecois doctor in Palestine, by Anaïs Barbeau-Lavalette in Panorama and Cesar Oiticica Folho's Hélio Oiticica, a documentary about the Brazilian artist, in the Forum.
Teddy Awards, which go to films that 'communicate queer themes on a broad social platform' were awarded to competition title In The Name Of, a drama about a concflicted priest directed by Ma'go'ka Szumowska; Concussion by Stacie Passon which Radius-TWC acquired in Sundance and documentary Bambi about Jean-Pierre Pruvot and directed by Sébastien Lifshitz.
