It's Official: 'Star Trek Into Darkness' To Preview In 500 IMAX 3D Theaters On Dec. 14

Previous: Paramount Showing Nine Minutes Of 'Star Trek Into Darkness' On IMAX Screens December 14

Paramount Pictures announced this morning it will release the first 9 minutes from JJ Abrams' much anticipated sequel Star Trek Into Darkness exclusively in IMAX 3D months prior to the film's official release in May 2013. This first look at the movie will play in approximately 500 digital IMAX 3D theatres beginning December 14th. This follows the studio's decision to sneak these 9 minutes before Peter Jackson's December tentpole The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Abrams' Star Trek Into Darkness used IMAX extreme high resolution cameras to capture several sequences. 'The footage is absolutely incredible,' said Greg Foster, Chairman and President, IMAX Filmed Entertainment. Paramount's marketing decision is the first time exclusive footage has played in IMAX 3D and only the 3rd time a first-look will be released in IMAX. Star Trek Into Darkness follows up Abrams' 2009 hit film that reinvigorated the Star Trek franchise and is written by Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci and directed by Abrams who is producing with Bryan Burk through Bad Robot Productions, along with Lindelof, Kurtzman and Orci.
