We all know filmmakers will go to great lengths to publicize their movies. So The Advocate today pointed us to this recent video of a rare on-camera appearance by Lana Wachowski, who nearly a decade ago first announced her transition from Larry Wachowski. With Lana Wachowski's brother  Andy and director Tom Tykwer, the trio are unusually promoting their new collaborative movie Cloud Atlas releasing October 26th. The filmmakers describe their multi-narrative adaptation of the much-lauded novel by British author David Mitchell:

Apple TV Relents And Offers Its Users Access To Hulu Plus

This could be a significant change for Apple: So far it has only made iTunes and Netflix available to Apple TV users who wanted to order movies and TV shows. Strangely, the companies aren't saying much about the decision. There's no press release with grandiose statements from execs ' just this mention on the Hulu blog with instructions for Apple TV users who want to access the $7.99 a month service. But Apple's desire to limit consumers' choices seemed to put Apple TV at a competitive disadvantage to rivals including game consoles (such as Microsoft's Xbox and Sony's PS3) and Roku boxes that provide gateways to other video services including Amazon Prime. Hulu Plus streams a variety of TV shows including current and old series from ABC, NBC, FOX, The CW and Univision.

'Dark Knight Rises' Composer Hans Zimmer Records Song For Aurora Victims

The Oscar-winning composer says on his Facebook page that that he recorded the 8:26 minute elegiacal tone poem, titled Aurora, 'as a heartfelt tribute to the victims and their families.' He's offering it on Apple's iTunes store for $1.29, and on Moontoast for as little as 10 cents. All of the proceeds will go to Aurora Victim Relief organizations, Zimmer says. He won his Oscar for writing the score to Disney's The Lion King. Zimmer's other film work includes Gladiator, The Dark Knight, Inception, Black Hawk Down, The Simpsons Movie, and several Pirates Of The Caribbean movies.

Peter Jackson Confirms 'The Hobbit' Will Be Three Films

Mike Fleming

BREAKING: Peter Jackson has just confirmed that he will split The Hobbit into three films, the third of which will be released sometime in the summer of 2014. Jackson dropped hints about this at Comic-Con, explaining that he had a wealth of storytelling that came from 125 pages of appendices that JRR Tolkien included in a later publication of The Return of the King, the final installment of The Lord of the Rings. I wrote a piece skeptical of milking three movies out of a single book, and 125 pages of notes, and I hope that Jackson delivers the goods. I don't believe there have been any renegotiation with talent that should be paid an extra check for another film, even if they didn't know they were making three. Those details are still being worked out.

'Dark Knight Rises' Recovering And Nearing $500M Global And Starting To Set Records; 'The Watch' And 'Step Up Revolution' Weak

SATURDAY PM/SUNDAY AM, 3RD UPDATE: What's normally one of the best box office weekends of the summer fell victim to a lack of must-see pics, the rivalry of the London Olympics opening ceremonies and games, and the awful aftermath of the Colorado theater shooting. (And don't think for a minute that  the Hollywood studios aren't using these excuses as cover') This weekend started out as a downer for North American moviegoing on Friday. Then went up a bit Saturday. (Noted one studio exec, 'It doesn't make as good a story as terror in cinemas, but the box office recovered nicely Saturday from opening night at the Olympics.') And ended with a total $135M, which is still a massive -22% drop from last year. 'Hopefully next week, also one of the best of the summer, everything bounces back,' an exec emailed me. But right now reality bites: both new movies this weekend were so weak they couldn't even crack the low teens in millions of dollars.  Summit Entertainment's PG-13 global dance franchise Step Up Revolution earned a 'B+' from audiences which should have helped word of mouth but didn't, while Twentieth Century Fox's R-rated comedy The Watch with stars Vince Vaughn, Ben Stiller, and Jonah Hill received only a 'C+' so wanna-see will be limited.

But Warner Bros' and Legendary Pictures'  The Dark Knight Rises remained a strong #1 and even jumped +42% from this Friday to Saturday after the London Olympics opening show had aired. TDKR's domestic total of $290M through Sunday is the 3rd highest for a recent movie's first 10 days in release, behind only The Dark Knight ($313.7M) and this early summer Marvel's The Avengers ($373M). It soon will be the 3rd fastest to reach $300M behind the same two pics (not adjusting for inflation or IMAX or higher ticket prices). I'm sure TDKR is on its way to even more records but Warner Bros thinks its inappropriate to boast about them post-Aurora. Nolan's Batman finale has a worldwide cume closing in on half a billion in its first 10 days ' which ain't too shabby given everything that's gone on. This threequel's grosses are still trailing Christopher Nolan's second franchise installment The Dark Knight. Which is to be expected since NRG research showed that 20%-25% of the domestic moviegoing audience was still very hesitant to go this weekend because of the Colorado theater shooting. Besides adding $65M this domestic weekend, The Dark Knight Rises grossed $27.4M in 57 overseas markets for Friday. That brings the international cume to $176.1M after opening in big-ticket countries like Mexico, Brazil, France, Germany, Russia, Japan this weekend. Saturday's and Sunday's overseas tally is still to come today.

Though these two stars made moolah together in the PG-13 Dodgeball more than a decade ago, 2011 ensemble movies starring Vince Vaughn (The Dilemma) and Ben Stiller (Tower Heist) individually underperformed, and that trend continues in 2012 with this latest reteaming. Then again, this pic couldn't catch a break: even before the Colorado killings, Florida's hot button Trayvon Martin-George Zimmerman tragedy necessitated a last-minute name change after the neighborhood watch image became no laughing matter. ('Obviously that situation is a horrible event in its own right,' a Fox exec told me, 'but this movie is a broad comedy that bears no relation to that tragedy, other than originally having the title, Neighborhood Watch. That was a funny title that conveyed the movie. Until Zimmerman came on the scene. Then it was not funny at all any more. Now that people have seen the film, it's clear there is no connection, but we were sensitive to any perceived link.') The studio also pulled the pic's promotional materials and sanitized its trailers after both events. Right before release, the Harkins Theatre chain pulled about 29 venues at the last minute when it couldn't agree on financial terms with Fox. And don't forget that star-driven movies for the most part are sucking the big one this summer so the studio didn't expect more than a $15M opening ' and didn't get one. Fox claims The Watch which was shot in Atlanta cost $68 million. Publicity was straightforward with the guys primarily making appearances on talks shows and doing other TV press. Pic was produced by Shawn Levy and directed by Akiva Schaffer, with the credited screenwriters Jared Stern and Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg.

As for  Miami-set Step Up Revolution, that too was projected downward by the studio ' and not just because of the absence of Channing Tatum's 8-pack abs. Summit met, discussed, but left in the film an Aurora-offensive scene where the dancers steal into a party wearing body vests and gas masks and use gas grenades to threaten the guests. (It was the media talk on Twitter after the press screenings.) Summit did remove TV ads showcasing the scene, and isn't rotating a trailer using the scene, either. Note this franchise does more biz overseas then domestic. (The second installment internationally grossed close to double its cumulative domestic take, and the third film cumulatively grossed nearly triple abroad compared to North American business.) Here in North America, of its 2,567 theaters, about 90% this weekend will present this fourth film in 3D. Summit has taken the reins from Disney on both the domestic and international release of the film. (The previous 3 installments were distributed domestically by Disney, while Summit has always overseen international distribution). The film's budget is $33 million with the studio possessing very limited exposure due to robust foreign pre-sales. Marketing was aimed at tween/teen girls, but also Latinos and African-Americans with TV spots on 21 cable channels including Univision, Telemundo and BET. Small screen media was compressed into the last 2 weeks prior to opening, with almost half running after The Dark Knight Rises opened. A Step Up marathon on ABC Family showcased the previous three films. And not only did the soundtrack debut this week on Interscope Records, but a music video by Jennifer Lopez featuring Flo Rida launched globally on MTV, and a video by Timbaland featuring Ne-Yo had heavy support from VEVO. The film's dancers and choreographers did extensive touring, performing flash mobs, and participating in press days in the top 20 markets. Directed by Scott Speer from credited screenwriters Jenny Mayer and Duane Adler, the film was produced by former Summit-only execs Erik Feig and Patrick Wachsberger as well as Adam Shankman.

Here's the Top Ten based on weekend estimates:

Moviegoers Still Scared: 'The Watch' And 'Step Up Revolution' Can't Crack $5M Friday; 'Dark Knight Rises' Drops Shocking 76%

Related: 'Dark Knight Rises' Worldwide Total Now $374M: 25% Of Moviegoers Still Very Hesitant This Weekend

SATURDAY AM, 2ND UPDATE: Pardon my brief absence. I took a blissful Friday off at the start of what was sure to be a downer of a moviegoing weekend. And it is. This Friday-Sunday is adding up to not a lot more than $120M, which is -30% from last year. What's normally one of the best moviegoing weekends of the summer is shaping up to be one of the worst. Lack of must-see pics, the rivalry of the London Olympics opening ceremonies and games, and the awful aftermath of the Colorado theater shooting just aren't good news for any Hollywood studio. (And don't think for a minute that  Twentieth Century Fox bigwigs aren't using these excuses as cover') 'Hopefully next week, also one of the best of the summer, everything bounces back,' an exec emailed me. But reality bites: both new movies didn't fare well in Friday late night shows. Summit Entertainment's PG-13 global dance franchise Step Up Revolution earned a 'B+' from audiences which should help word of mouth, while Twentieth Century Fox's R-rated comedy The Watch received only a 'C+' so the wanna-see will be limited. Neither pic could top $5M Friday, while Warner Bros' and Legendary Pictures'  The Dark Knight Rises remained #1 even though it dropped a surprisingly hefty 76% from its opening a  week ago. This threequel is still trailing Christopher Nolan's second franchise installment The Dark Knight in grosses. To be expected since NRG research currently showing that 20%-25% of the domestic moviegoing audience is still very hesitant to go this weekend because of the Colorado theater shooting. Warner Bros this morning is claiming TDKR's $18M Friday is 'right on target' given the $30M midnights in shows a week ago. 'We were actually off 61% from last Friday's $45M which was even better then most of the big blockbusters that opened with huge midnight shows.'

Hot TV Spot: 'Skyfall'

Here's a TV spot for the new James Bond movie Skyfall which premiered during the Opening Ceremony of the London Summer Olympics:

Oh Danny Boy! Oh Boo NBC! Oscar-Winning Director's 'Giant Juke Box' Wins Kudos For Olympic Opener; NBC Hammered Back Home For Not Airing Live From London

Danny Boyle's London Olympics Opener Scores 14-Year BBC Ratings High

UPDATED WITH MORE NBC CONTROVERSY: NBC once again is screwing with (and screwing up) American viewers' Olympics. Which begs the question: why does the IOC keep handing the games on a platinum platter to the Numbskull Broadcasting Company? U.S. audiences weren't able to watch any of Danny Boyle's 2012 London opening ceremonies until primetime tonight, which was hours after it took place live. (On the West Coast, there was even a second tape-delayed broadcast 9 hours after the fact.) NBC's 30th Olympics executive producer Jim Bell  not only made that dumb decision but even prevented Americans from watching live on computers and portable devices. (And silly me, I thought the coverage would improve without destestable Dick Ebersol at the helm of his 9th Olympics' Didn't he invent NBC's lack of live coverage?) As if Comcast didn't have enough places to show or stream it live other than NBC primetime ' from NBC Sports Network, Bravo, MSNBC, CNBC and Telemundo, to all of nbcolympics.com. A sampling of tweets echoes my annoyance: 'NBC showing complete contempt for its audience by not showing or streaming Olympics opening ceremony live'' 'NBC making an incredible bid for gold medal for Stupidest Network Ever. No livestreaming, no broadcast, just pretending it doesn't exist'' 'Why didn't NBC show the Opening Ceremonies LIVE and show them again on tape delay in prime time?'

NBC pathetically defended itself thusly: 'We are live streaming every sporting event, all 32 sports and all 302 medals' The opening and closing ceremonies, however, are entertainment spectacles. Our award-winning production team will present them on a medium that best demonstrates their grandeur and majesty, and at a time when friends and family are able to gather together to watch, which is in prime time.'

As if that weren't enough of an outrage, NBC also insensitively edited out the Olympics Opening Ceremonies' tribute to 7/7 London bombing victims. Britons are fuming that cut from the NBC coverage was Scottish singer Emeli Sande performance of a moving rendition of 'Abide With Me' in their memory. Instead, the Numbskull Broadcasting Company replaced it with that Viscount of Vapidity Ryan Seacrest's bland interview with already overexposed-in-the-media American swimmer Michael Phelps. (The tribute, according to British press accounts, included big screen shots of Boyle's late father, and that of London 2012 chief Lord Coe, and dancers dressed in red, representing the struggle between life and death, picked out by a spotlight in the darkness of Olympic Stadium.)

I say send Jim Bell back to The Today Show pronto and don't let him near any more of this games or the next four more Olympics through 2020. Hard to believe that Bell built his reputation at NBC as a sports producer. Then again, isn't he losing Today's long and legendary lead over his morning show rival Good Morning America after 7 years? So why make him NBC Olympics czar when he can't even attract breakfast viewers anymore?

That said, Oscar-winning British director Danny Boyle won major round-the-world kudos for a cheeky Opening Ceremonies that turned Olympic  Stadium into a giant juke box. Who didn't enjoy the nonstop rock and pop homage to the birthplace of The Rolling Stones and The Beatles and everything else most cool about Britain? Naturally Paul McCartney and Mick Jagger were on hand as well as James Bond (Daniel Craig) and The Queen (for real and a stunt double too), Also Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean), Kenneth Branagh, David Bowie, and many others including David Beckham (a consolation prize since he didn't make the UK soccer team's cut). And let's not forget those animals: 70 sheep, 12 horses, 10 chickens, 10 ducks, 9 geese, 3 cows, 3 sheep dogs, and 2 goats. There was even a moving Muhammad Ali appearance. How Boyle kept almost everything secret is miraculous. What did you think of the show?

Google Outlines 1Gig Internet, TV Service Planned For Kansas City

Google has disclosed details of a planned 1 gigabit per second Internet service in the Kansas City area to go with an IPTV service with 161 channels, Multichannel.com reports. Google plans to charge $70 a month for the standalone fiber-optic delivered Internet connection or $120 per month for TV plus 1-Gig service with a two-year contract. Users also have the option to get 5 Mbps downstream Internet access for no monthly charge for at least seven years ' if they pay a one-time $300 'construction fee' or pay $25 per month for 12 months. The initial channel lineup listing however does not appear to include HBO, Disney Channel, ESPN, Fox News Channel, TNT, TBS and AMC. Google Fiber isn't actually available yet and initial hookups will require that 10% of a neighborhood's households will need to sign up to be in the first wave of customers. The Internet service will have no caps and no overage charges and will provide 1 Gbps both downstream and upstream. The Google Fiber TV service includes a 2-Terabyte DVR and the ability to record up to eight shows at once. The TV service also will be available on Android and iOS devices, and will include a voice-enabled search function. Google also will throw in an Android tablet for use as a remote.

'Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry,' 'Killer Joe,' 'Ruby Sparks' ' Specialty Box Office Preview

Brian Brooks is managing editor of MovieLine.

Two 2012 Sundance Film Festival documentaries hit the specialty market this coming weekend. Competition titles Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry and Big Boys Gone Bananas!* will add to 2012's lineup of non-fiction fare which has seen box office success with Bully and Jiro Dreams of Sushi. LD Entertainment is attempting to make proverbial lemonade out of its NC-17 rating for Killer Joe, which has had audiences clamoring for tickets at festivals and other events. Drafhouse Films is banking on its Danish comedy Klown to cross over for U.S. specialty audiences and possibly break out further, while Ruby Sparks sailed into Fox Searchlight after an easy shoot for a story that will appeal to 18-35s (or 40s).

Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry
Writer-director: Alison Klayman
Subjects: Ai Weiwei, Danqing Chen, Ying Gao
Distributor: Sundance Selects

An American freelance journalist who lived in China from 2006 to 2010, Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry director Alison Klayman first met the famed Chinese artist Ai Weiwei through her roommate who asked her to put together a short video for an art show of Ai's New York photographs while in Beijing. She quickly realized there was more to tell. 'I just felt like to do a character portrait of him would really not only be entertaining but also it would illuminate something about a side of contemporary China that I felt like I was just encountering for the first time through him,' said Klayman. 'So I was definitely feeling that at least I needed to follow up with this guy and he liked the video that I did for the exhibition. So that was also a good way to keep moving forward.'

The film screened in competition at Sundance as well as the Berlinale. Sundance Selects picked up the film soon afterward. 'We've been working with Susan Norget and Fredell Pogodin on publicity [and] 360 Communications on grassroots with a focus on art world and technology as well as Julie Huang on Chinese-American outreach,' IFC Films/Sundance Selects exec Ryan Werner told Deadline. Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry will open in New York this weekend at Lincoln Plaza and IFC Center as well as the Kabuki and Embarcadero in San Francisco and in Washington, D.C. at the E Street. 'We have speakers at every theater this weekend,' noted Werner. The film will open in Los Angeles the following week.

Big Boys Gone Bananas!*
Director Fredrik Gertten
Subjects: Fredrik Gertten, Alex Rivera, Alfonso Allende
Distributor: (Self-distributed)

Big Boys Gone Bananas!* is a movie the filmmaker never quite planned to make. In 2009, Swedish director Fredrik Gertten took his documentary Bananas!* to the Los Angeles Film Festival. The result was a litigious onslaught by U.S. giant Dole foods to keep it from being seen. The film details the legal odyssey of 12 Nicaraguan banana workers who sued the company for using a banned pesticide. 'It was made for only $50K and when we released the trailer, we got a cease and desist order,' Gertten said. 'They sent the order to LAFF organizers and their sponsors including the Los Angeles Times and American Airlines.' But undeterred, he showed up to screen the film and 'all hell broke loose.' said Gretten. For the follow-up, Gertten and his team started documenting their journey from being taken to court by Dole (iby the same firm that represented Chevron in its fight against filmmaker Joe Berlinger for his doc Crude) and their campaign to undermine him. 'This film [delves] into the PR industry and their tactics to ridicule me such as buying my name on Google so they can discredit me,' said Gretten. 'They spent a lot of money to block my film, but we won and they had to pay our $200K lawyer fees. It was a very scary and long process. This film was not meant to be, but it told its own story.'

'This story is less about fruit and more about media and what a big corporation can do,' Gertten says. 'It's also like a thriller in many ways, but with a happy ending.' The film will play Michael Moore's Traverse City Film Festival later this month. Theatrical release 'as an Oscar-qualifying run,' per Gertten, is set for Friday in New York at the Quad Theatre, followed by L.A. at Laemmle cinemas in Pasadena and Santa Monica the weekend of August 3rd. The filmmakers plan to announce a distributor during the Toronto International Film Festival, according to Gertten, with more dates to follow.

Killer Joe
Director: William Friedkin
Writers: Tracy Letts (screenplay and play)
Cast: Matthew McConaughey, Emile Hirsch, Juno Temple, Thomas Haden Church, Gina Gershon
Distributor: LD Entertainment

Killer Joe will be heading out into the world with an NC-17, star-appeal, a story packed with violence and its share of critical acclaim so far. 'We thought the performances were incredible,' LD Entertainment president David Dinerstein said. 'A [prominent] filmmaker in Cannes told me in Cannes that it's the 'most provocative thing' he's seen this year. With The Exorcist, French Connection and others, Friedkin is always raising the bar.' Raising the bar does not always make for an easy release and the film's NC-17 raises red flags just like any other film branded with the unpopular rating. Still, the film has had a good run at festivals, selling out screenings at SXSW and Seattle, where Friedkin received a lifetime achievement award. The director was also guest director at the Los Angeles Film Festival. 'It's exciting because the tickets to these events went really fast,' said Dinerstein. Plus the cast 'allows for some traditional reach-out like talk shows.' McConaughey appeared on the Daily Show and Late Night With Jimmy Fallon in support of the film, with Gershon also doing Fallon. The film also scored a sizable feature in the New York Times. 'Friedkin is also very active on Twitter,' said Dinerstein. 'Unlike other artists and entertainers, he's actually doing the Twitter himself, it's not a publicist. Everyone's embracing doing things differently. So we'll see how we stand with the NC-17, but to date it hasn't been a real hurdle.'

Still, there has been some pushback in terms of where the company can advertise, though the film is opening in New York this weekend at venues Lincoln Square, the AMC Empire and the Sunshine Theatre. 'These are some of the best screens in Manhattan,' noted Dinerstein. 'There's nothing wrong with saying this is a film for adult audiences and we hope to grow it. It's going to make them laugh and make them hold onto their seats. It's a crazy but entertaining film.' It expands next weekend to LA, Austin, Dallas, Chicago, San Francisco, and Washington DC.

Klown
Director: Mikkel Nørgaard
Writers: Casper Christensen (screenplay, story), Frank Hvam (screenplay, story), Mikkel Nørgaard (story)
Cast: Frank Hvam, Casper Christensen, Marcuz Jezz Petersen, Mia Lyhne
Distributor: Drafthouse Films

The folks at Drafthouse Films (the distribution label under started under Austin-based exhibitor Alamo Drafthouse) first saw the Danish comedy Klown at the Fantasia Film Festival and later screened it in Austin at Fantastic Fest. The film is the culmination of a popular Danish television show of the same title that ran for six years 'We link it to The Hangover, it has some of the same outrageous behavior,' Drafthouse Films exec James Shapiro said. 'There's a lot of humor that breaks social taboos, but has a lot of heart to it.' Shapiro said it's not necessary to have seen the show that spawned the film to understand it and the humor should be accessible to Americans. 'The filmmakers themselves had a lot of American influence growing up and that formed the [basis] for Klowns,' he said. 'So we think it has some breakout potential because it's one of the funniest of the year.'

Drafthouse Films will open Klown in New York, Austin and Los Angeles (at The Cinefamily) with expansions planned for San Francisco, Portland, OR and Seattle. 'It's our first release with a VOD strategy, which will make the film available on demand Friday,' added Shapiro. Drafthouse Films is going for the mainstream, but will focus on crowds that are at the core of Fantastic Fest and their regulars at the Alamo Drafthouse. 'We also think it can cross over and we have our fingers crossed for that. We think it's really one of the funniest things you'll see this year.'

Ruby Sparks
Directors: Jonathan Dayton, Valerie Faris
Writer: Zoe Kazan (screenplay)
Cast: Paul Dano, Zoe Kazan, Annette Bening, Antonio Banderas, Elliott Gould
Distributor: Fox Searchlight

Ruby Sparks producers Albert Berger and Ron Yerxa noted that one of the most unusual aspects to creating the feature on the logistical side was that it happened rather seamlessly. They first spoke with Zoe Kazan and Paul Dano in L.A. and then everything proceeded from there. 'This is an amazing film because things went so smoothly from the get-go,' Yerxa said. 'We met with Zoe and Paul at Rose Cafe in Venice and we met with directors and Jonathan and Valerie read script several times and they worked with Zoe. We were only the producers.' Initially, they weren't sure how to finance the film (more typical) but then Fox Searchlight stepped up (more atypical) and we made it all in L.A., which is everyone's hometown.'

Ruby Sparks shot last year over 30 days and Berger, who also produced Little Miss Sunshine, said the budget came in around the same as that film (about $8 million) and the production sported much of the same crew. Kazan and Dano were pre-destined to star in the project, and Searchlight stepped away when the production added the rest of the cast. 'They had a point-of-view, but it was good as you can get with a studio,' added Berger. 'We had the freedom you have with an indie film and but with their support.'

'Obviously with Little Miss Sunshine we had Sundance with a launching point but we don't have that with this,' added Yerxa. 'But Jonathan and Valerie are traveling around to do word-of-mouth screenings, so it will be interesting to see how this type of [marketing] will go against the grain. We get a sense that this is working.' Berger and Yerxa said the 18 to 35 or 40 audience is its 'core' due to its 'smart examination of relationships.' Ruby Sparks opens in five markets in 13 theaters Friday and will begin expanding in about 10 days. Noted Berger: 'With the Olympics and Batman as competition, there will be some big guerrillas to weave between, under and around, but we think it will stand out in its counter-programming sense and we think we have a good shot.'

MGM Holdings Says That It's Preparing To Go Public

The company isn't talking, but says in a cryptic press release that it has 'submitted a draft registration statement on a confidential basis' to the SEC for 'a possible initial public offering of its Class A common stock.' I hear that J.P Morgan and Goldman Sachs are managing the IPO plans. Although the devil's in the details, the announcement suggests that MGM has come a long way since late 2010 when it emerged from bankruptcy. Last year MGM spent $30.3M to repurchase about 1.5M shares; it ended 2011 with net income of $37.8M on revenues of $699.1M. MGM's library includes about 4,100 films ' including the Rocky, Pink Panther, and James Bond franchises ' and more than 10,400 hours of TV programming from the libraries of United Artists, Orion Pictures, Goldwyn Entertainment and PolyGram Filmed Entertainment. MGM also is a partner at EPIX, with Viacom and Lionsgate. The company disclosed in March that it acquired 100% of United Artists late last year, giving it the rights to Hot Tub Time MachineFameValkyrie, and Lions for Lambs. MGM said that it 'may resume using the United Artists banner to develop and produce new films.' The company added that it is co-financing New Line's two films based on The Hobbit. It also appears to be tight with several studios including Viacom as a financing partner for Paramount's G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, and MTV Networks' TV series Teen Wolf. MGM's board includes former Fox and Discovery exec Peter Liguori, former Pixar CFO Ann Mather, former MySpace co-president Jason Hirschhorn, former CBS CFO Fredric Reynolds, as well representatives of major backers including Anchorage Capital, Highland Capital and Icahn Capital.

Michael Ross To Adapt 'BZRK' For Sony

Mike Fleming

EXCLUSIVE: Michael Ross will adapt BZRK, the novel by Michael Grant and Shadow Gang, into a feature film for Sony Pictures and producers Sam Raimi and Josh Donen. Acquired last fall, BZRK is the first in a three-book series by Grant, who previously wrote Gone and co-created the Animorphs series. BZRK is a youth oriented tale with an ambitious premise. A team of gifted teens control biological nanobot robots warriors and they battle another group that is controlled by conjoined twins whose nanobots are brainwashing world leaders. The megalomaniacal twins are trying to take over the world.

Ross previously wrote Turistas, the thriller directed by John Stockwell. He also recently did a rewrite on Robin Hood 2058 and scripted I Owe You, an original screenplay for Media Rights Capital, which Jacob Estes is attached to direct. Russell Hollander is executive producer. Grant and Ross are repped by CAA, Ross also by Management 360.

New Date For 'Gangster Squad': January 11

Mike Fleming

Gangster Squad Release DateWarner Bros is expected to announce today that it has moved Gangster Squad from September 7 to January 11. The move allows the filmmakers to excise a shootout scene that takes place in a movie theater, which nobody wants to see after the Aurora, Colorado, tragedy at the midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises. There will be an alternate murder spree scene shot, but it will not be in a movie theater. The move also creates some distance for the film, which unfortunately had a trailer attached to the Batman finale. Fox faced a similar dilemma with its comedy The Watch. Even though that film is about a volunteer neighborhood patrol encountering aliens, its original title Neighborhood Watch brought unfortunate connotations to the fatal shooting of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman. Changing that title was an attempt to avoid appearing sensitive and tasteless, and it seems to have worked.

The Ruben Fleischer-directed Gangster Squad is an L.A. Confidential-style period mob tale that stars Ryan Gosling, Sean Penn, Josh Brolin and Emma Stone, and it takes place in the 1940s and '50s during the crime reign of Mickey Cohen. The six months of breathing room should help bring the focus back to the storyline, and not a murder spree that has no other correlation to the film.

Harvey And Bob Weinstein To Receive PGA's Milestone Award

LOS ANGELES, CA (July 23, 2012) ' The Producers Guild of America (PGA) announced today that legendary filmmakers Bob and Harvey Weinstein, co-founders and Co-Chairmen of The Weinstein Company, will be honored with the 2013 Milestone Award. The award will be presented to the Weinsteins at the 24th Annual Producers Guild Awards ceremony on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

The Milestone Award is the Guild's highest honor recognizing an individual or team who has made historic contributions to the entertainment industry. In the past, the Producers Guild has paid tribute to such industry leaders as Clint Eastwood, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Steven Spielberg, Walt Disney, James Cameron, Ron Meyer and last year's 2012 recipient Leslie Moonves, among others.

'Beginning in the late 1970s with Miramax Films and continuing through today with The Weinstein Company, Bob and Harvey consistently seek out, nurture and help bring audiences the stories that others are often afraid to tell,' said Producers Guild National Board member and Awards Chair Michael De Luca (MONEYBALL, THE SOCIAL NETWORK). 'Their passionate regard for the spectacular diversity and resolve of the human spirit has brought us such iconic and award-winning films as THE CRYING GAME, SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE, PULP FICTION, THE ENGLISH PATIENT, GOOD WILL HUNTING, THE KING'S SPEECH and most recently, THE ARTIST and the courageous documentary, BULLY. Bob and Harvey's brave dedication to emerging producers and other storytellers has virtually redefined the term 'independent film,' making it possible for some of our culture's most vital stories to break out from the shadows of smaller arthouse theaters into the bright light of large multiplexes around the globe. We salute them for their contributions to our industry, and we are so proud to recognize them with the Guild's highest honor.'

'We couldn't be more thankful to our fellow producers and the many predecessors who've inspired us and guided the independent film world to its present state,' said Bob and Harvey Weinstein. 'It is easy to be dedicated to something you love. Without our peers who've joined us in taking chances on the first time director or the unknown talent, and without the curious audiences who take chances on the movie with subtitles or better yet, no sound or color, we wouldn't be where we are today. We're deeply honored and humbled for this recognition from the Producers Guild of America for our life's work.'
